Are Bongs Safe?

When using a bong or water pipe, smoke goes through water before you inhale it. According to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, “research on tobacco smoke suggests some of the chemicals in smoke is filtered out by water. However, the most recent research with marijuana suggests water is actually better at filtering out THC than filtering out harmful tars. This means that a smoker using a water pipe would probably inhale more harmful tars in order to get the same dose of THC as someone smoking an unfiltered cigarette.”

All that simply means that marijuana users who use bongs have to smoke more weed to get high. Forget what your friends tell you, bongs no matter how cool they are, are a waste of cash.

The important thing to always remember is. Smoking is dangerous no matter the method or substance used. The reason why bongs are in my opinion dangerous is, using one, forces you to smoke deeper into the lungs. This exposes more of the lungs to tar and other harmful toxins without increasing the perceived positive effects (higher).

Is It Safe To Share A Bong?

Saliva is an excellent substance for transferring certain types of disease-causing germs, a bong won’t give you AIDS but it can give you any other disease that’s easily transmittable through saliva. Some diseases you might get from sharing a bong with a stranger or the “quagmire” in your life “giggity” include:

  • Herpes: has no cure but can be “controlled” with cannabis. The chances of you getting herpes from a bong are very low, but the bad thing is, if you get wet saliva on your lips you are screwed.
  • Common cold or flu.
  • Hepatitis A, B, and C
  • Cold sores
  • Bongitis (bronchitis)

For safety reasons, don’t share a bong especially with strangers. If you must, at least put a condom on it! No that won’t work, let’s stick to not sharing.

Dirty Bong Water

According to experts, you should change out the water in your bong before every smoke session, why?

Bongwater gets dirty and it is stagnant, as a consequence of that if you leave water in your bong for long enough, you create the perfect conditions for germs and bacteria to multiply. From the word legion, legionellosis is a common name for a large number of illnesses caused by Legionnaires’ disease bacteria. Legionnaire’s disease is a severe form of pneumonia that you might get by inhaling the bacteria that causes it. If it’s not treated early enough, it may result in your death.

Cleaning a bong takes at max two minutes, all you need is an abrasive such as salt, rubbing alcohol, small fabric to plug the stem and plastic gloves. I’m sure you can figure out what to do with all that.

There is also the issue of mold. Your bong is exposed to water, organic matter and bodily fluids. Because of that, there is the possibility that it might grow mold. To keep mold from growing, you should take your bong apart and clean every inch of it before or after you use it.

If you find yourself in a situation where you are too stoned to go to the kitchen and get yourself a glass of water, DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT drink bong water. The water in your bong is there to filter out carcinogens if you go ahead and drink it you will get no benefit from it and you might get very sick.

Can You Get HIV From A Bong?

Remember that time you convinced yourself that you had AIDS and were too chicken to go get yourself tested? The good news is. You can’t get HIV or AIDS from a bong, joint or even cigarette. If you decide to share a bong, the things you should be worried about are:

  • Streptococcus
  • Escherichia coli
  • Flavobacterium
  • Mold
  • Aspergillus
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa

These are microbes that may trigger an allergic reaction or lung infections. If you are exposed to these microbes while smoking weed, you may experience:

  • Chest congestion
  • Headache
  • Shortness of breath
  • Airway inflammation
  • Lower lung infection
  • Sinus and nose infection
  • Mucus and prolonged cough
  • Aches and pain

Is There A Safe Way To Use Bongs?

Your plastic homemade bong is not safe if you have one. Throw it out the window right now. The problem with plastic bongs is, they absorb odors and there is also the fact that most plastics can cause cancer. The safest option you have is to buy a glass bong, glass bongs are easier to clean, they don’t absorb odors and if used right, they don’t expose you to toxins or carcinogens.

So avoid smoking out of plastics as much as possible.

Although cool in some people’s eyes, bongs are a waste of cash, you will use more weed and you won’t get higher than a person who chooses to smoke a joint. Have anything to say in defense of bongs? Tell us in the comment section.
