Ever had a really, really bad day? What if on top of your bad day you come home and find not your boyfriend or girlfriend cheating, but the weed you spent $200 on yesterday has gone bad? That’s enough to make some people bite you.
See the thing is, one of the best ways to save money on marijuana is to buy weed in bulk, but the problem with buying weed in bulk is. If you don’t store the product right, it will go bad. Another thing you should worry about is. Over time, just like all other herbs, cannabis loses its potency and flavor.
Question, do you understand how freshness works?
You think you do but most people don’t. Just like you, weed is affected by heat, light, moisture, and air. To keep that old hag Mother Nature from destroying your precious herb, the best place to store it is in an airtight container.
How to Preserve Weed
For those of you who believed in themselves and decided to grow marijuana at home, it is important to learn how to dry your herb after you harvest it. The best time to harvest marijuana plants growing outdoors is mid-morning. Let the morning dew dry from the leaves and don’t cut the entire plant if you want it to continue growing.
Follow these steps:
- Cut healthy branches from your plant.
- Remove diseased or dry leaves (yellow or spotted leaves) and insects (smoking spiders won’t make you Spiderman).
- Shake off excess soil, rinse with cool water and hang or lay the herbs outdoors or in a room where there is plenty of circulation.
- Bundle 4-6 stems together and tie them using a rubber band.
- Hang the bundles or sticks upside down off a coat hanger or clothesline. Alternatively, you can dry your weed on a mesh rack or in a cardboard box.
The drying process should take anywhere from three to seven days or more depending on the amount of weed and the temperature. Drying cannabis converts THC from its nonpsychoactive form (THCV) to its psychoactive PH neutral form (THC). And that’s why you get high when you smoke dry herb.
Fresh marijuana is not very potent, meaning, if you smoke or eat it, you will either get a little high or not high at all.
If you dry your weed too quickly, it will taste bad and burn unevenly. The reason for that is. Pigments such as chlorophylls, starch and nitrates will be trapped. So don’t take shortcuts, wait.
THC is the stuff that gets you high, to keep it from degenerating, you should store your weed in a cool dark place and away from humans with little hands and lots of curiosity.
Just Microwave It: Bad idea
That is a very bad idea, why?
Instead of drying weed, microwaves even when set on low cook your herb, the result of that is. Your herb loses flavor and oil content. That’s not good if you intend to extract oil from it, is it now?
How Long Does Weed Remain Fresh?
As mentioned above, the best place to store your weed is in an airtight container. The reason for that is. Baggies, zippered plastic bags and mason jars keep out moisture and air.
To retain flavor, don’t crush the leaves, store them whole and only crush or grind them when needed. After harvesting, drying and storing your weed, you should open the jar or baggie for five minutes or more daily in the first two weeks, doing this will ensure that the herb dries properly.
The truth is, if stored properly, your herb will retain its flavor and remain fresh for up to a year or more.
You should discard any dried herbs that show the slightest sign of mold. The thing is, and smoking moldy weed is bad for you, the worst that might happen is. You may smoke toxic mold and die.
Can I Smoke Old Marijuana?
Yes, you can, the question is, should you?
Smoking old weed is not bad for you, the problem is mold. If you have an immune system deficiency, smoking moldy weed can kill you.
The type of mold you should be most worried about is black mold.
Black mold is a neurotoxin that suppresses your immune system, causes tremors, mood swings, neurological shifts, and if you are exposed to it for long enough, it might kill you. Some signs that you are smoking moldy weed are:
- Weight loss
- Reduced ability to smell
The good news is. You can tell if there is a mold issue just by looking at your herb. Here is what you should look for:
- Dark green or black spots
- Moldy smell (urine smell)
- Grey cotton candy mold
Generally, if you store your weed properly and check up on it from time to time. It can last month’s even years. It may lose its potency after a while but you will still get a high from it. That means that there is nothing wrong with smoking old weed as long as it doesn’t have mold or anything else growing on it. Keep your weed away from the sun in cool dark place and when in doubt or when you fear death, just call your dealer and buy new weed.
